Bible Study: Made in the Image of Christ

Made in the Image of Christ isn't a peg to hang our hats on; it is a shadow shielding us from false light. It is a revelation, encouraging us to be compassionate toward others. It is hope for eternal life.

by M. J. Joachim

Religion, institutions and rules aside, Christ didn't walk around stoning, chastising or whipping anyone into submission, in an effort to gain believers of His teachings. Nor did He spend time berating and talking down to people, demanding they distinguish His authority as God's son. Upon close reflection on Christ's dealings with those He me, one can easily recognize our Lord's efforts to pursue relationships with His followers, as opposed to making them into robots who gave up all feeling and reason, upon being called. Relationships are the very human element of being mad in the Image of Christ, which exemplifies who we are, and what we are about.

It is therefore no surprise to read biblical passages revealing Jesus admonishing people who elevated themselves above others, on the false claim that they alone had the answers to salvation, thereby enabling them to help others save themselves.Taking this idea to the furthest extreme, consider some compelling biblical examples in which Jesus showed compassion to others, many of whom proud members of society, would have cast out and tried to destroy:

  • Woman at the well
  • Woman about to be stoned
  • Thief on the cross
  • Peter's denial
  • Judas's betrayal
  • Thomas's doubt

Interestingly enough, these and many other examples clearly show that even Christ’s disciples needed His compassion and direction, regardless of their love for Him, and the unwavering, personal friendship they nurtured with Him. None of these people could claim to know ‘Truth.’ They knew Jesus, Himself, a man who clearly taught them the entire ‘Truth’ would be fully revealed in eternity, and not before.

We are often blinded by the most miniscule knowledge, particles and tidbits of information we cling to in the hopes of feeling secure about who we are. Yet, we are the ones with no reason to fear. Made in the Image of Christ isn’t a peg to hang our hats on; it is a shadow shielding us from false light. It is a revelation, encouraging us to be compassionate toward others. It is hope for eternal life.
